Visitors can see the Ingalls homestead site (pictured here) in De Smet, the "Little Town on the Prairie" made famous by author Laura Ingalls Wilder. Five cottonwood trees that Pa planted—one for Ma and each of the girls—still stand at the site. Other stops in De Smet include the Surveyor's Shanty, where the Ingalls family spent their first Dakota winter, and the house that Pa built back in 1887.
