Description

The Herreid Military Museum at the Rock County Courthouse Square opened to rave reviews in 2009. The museum was born out of the desire from the community to share the stories of service and sacrifice of WWII veterans made popular in Ken Burns' epic documentary THE WAR. THE WAR told the story of four American towns. Luverne was one of those four cities being chosen by Burns after his viewing of the PBS documentary of Quentin Aanenson. Aanenson produced a documentary of his service in the Army Air Corps during WWII serving as a Thunderbolt pilot in the European Theatre. Aanenson's artifacts as well as artifacts of many other Rock County natives tell the story of the bravery of the greatest generation during this epic conflict. Work continued with the museum as it opened a display of WWI. Scheduled for unveiling in 2014, the Herreid Military Museum will add another floor of stories, artifacts and pictures featuring the stories from Korea to the present.
The Herreid Military Museum was named by benefactors: Warren G. Herreid II and Jeannine Rivet in honor of their family.
