Don’t let the Stillwater River’s name deceive you! Draining the Absaroka-Beartooth Wilderness of the Absaroka Mountains, the sparkling Stillwater River is anything but! Free-flowing waters tumble quickly downstream through several non-commercially run sections that approach Class V. Once the Stillwater has settled a bit it enters the commercially run sections, ranging from beginner to intermediate in whitewater difficulty.
The two sections run on the Stillwater are rather similar in difficulty, with one offering a bit more tame and shorter trip than the other. Boulder gardens, bouncy waves, and busy riffles with good splash potential are sure to please travel weary visitors. Fed by snowmelt, trips on the Stillwater are commercially offered from mid-spring through mid-summer and last from a half day to full day in length.
