Midland, Michigan Travel Guide

Midland is a small to medium size city with a population of 41,000 residents. The Dow Chemical Company plays an important role in the culture of the city, as it has contributed to much of its economy and its attractions over the years.

There is the H. H. Dow Historical Museum, Dow Gardens, the Alden Dow Home and Studio, and of course, Dow Chemical whose plants are available for guided tours. The Midland Center for the Arts features art and science exhibits, and is the site of Matrix: Midland?a 17 day festival of art, dance, music, film and science.

Home to several colleges and universities, including Northwood University, Delta College, Central Michigan University, Davenport University and the Michigan Molecular Institute, Midland has a student friendly atmosphere.

For recreation seekers, the Pere Marquette Rail-Trail, a 22-mile long stretch is available to cyclists, in-line skaters, and hikers. There are three rivers in the area, the Chippewa, the Pine and the Tittabawassee. The City of Midland Canoe Livery and the Chippewa Valley Canoe Livery and Campground rent out canoe and tubing equipment to water sport enthusiasts. The Chippewa Nature Center is considered one of the best private nature centers in the world. Located along the Pine River, it houses a variety of bird species and wildlife, and a River Overlook offers great views of the center's offerings.

Midland is located in northeast Michigan, west of Bay City, and northwest of Saginaw.
