Ancient fossils still lie hidden in the bold and bronzen buttes of Badlands National Park, a protected wilderness penetrated by hiking and biking trails.
The South Tongue River has been managed as a wild (no stocking) trout fishery since 1991. Recent fish population estimates, conducted after stocking was discontinued, indicate that wild Rainbow, Brown and Brook trout populations range between 4,000 and 5,000 trout per mile, 65 to 75% of which are greater than 6 inches long.
