Ancient fossils still lie hidden in the bold and bronzen buttes of Badlands National Park, a protected wilderness penetrated by hiking and biking trails.
From Kanab this Byway follows US-89 through Three Lakes Canyon and the Vermillion Cliffs past several western movie locations. The road soon passes Coral Pink Sand Dunes State Park. Here a panoramic view unfolds of the White Cliffs and the majestic towers of Zion National Park. Next, the Byway descends to the east fork of the Virgin River at Mt. Carmel Junction. The road then winds through the green fields and orchards of Long Valley and the towns of Mt. Carmel, Orderville and Glendale. North of Glendale, the highway leaves the canyon landscape and enters a forested mountain valley. At Long Valley Junction, the Byway descends the wide mountain valley of the Sevier River through Hatch to Red Canyon Junction and the beginning of U-12.
