Farmington, New Mexico Travel Guide

Complete Vacation, Recreation and Tourism Information

Farmington (pop 36,000) sits at an elevation of just over 5000 feet at the confluence of the San Juan, La Plata and Animas River systems. Known to the Navajo as Tahota, or 'amongst the rivers', Farmington serves as an excellent gateway town to the many recreational opportunities that the northwestern part of New Mexico has to offer. Farmington originally sprouted from ranch and agricultural roots, though today the town supports itself through a mix of mining, hydroelectric power generation and tourism.

Farmington is close to the four corners area and is best accessed via NM Highway 64 eastbound off US Highway 666 from Shiprock or via US Highway 550 southbound from Durango, Colorado. Visitors will find a wide variety of accommodations available in Farmington, from simple local motels to higher end chain hotel options and even a unique bed & breakfast that is located in a developed cave above the La Plata River. There is a good selection of dining options for visitors to choose from in Farmington ranging from good steakhouses and brew-pubs, to Americana diners and numerous fast food chains.
