Dubois, Wyoming Travel Guide

Complete Vacation, Recreation and Tourism Information

Dubois (pop 1000) is a picturesque settlement, sitting at the heart of fertile ranch-land fed by the waters of the Wind River and rimmed by brilliant orange badland formations. Dubois is located on the northern edge of the Wind River Mountain Range, within sight of the mighty Absaroka Mountains to the north. Dubois is located in a region of Wyoming known as the 'Banana Belt', which experiences far better weather than the majority of the state averaging close to 300 days of sunshine per year. Dubois rather mild climate attracts Bighorn Sheep from the surrounding mountains during the winter months, numbering over 900 animals at a time, giving the area the distinction of possessing the largest Bighorn herd on Earth.

Dubois can be accessed via car from the west via Moran Junction and Teton National Park on US route 26/287 and from the southeast via US route 287 from Lander or US route 26 from Riverton. There are a handful of standard hotel/motel type lodging options available in Dubois and most are easy on the wallet. There are also several eateries in the town of Dubois where travelers will be able to find a decent meal. Travelers to the Union Pass area, just outside Dubois along a gravel roadway system, will find several mountain lodge options where accommodations and dining are available year-round. For those visitors wanting to be completely immersed into ranch life, the Dubois area has a number of working Dude Ranches to choose from. Visitors should check with the local Chamber of Commerce for more detailed information on lodging rates and dining options around the Dubois area.
